Roofed Pergola in New Jersey

For this project, our client has some big plans for his back yard, eventually turning the patio space into a great area for entertaining. We’re talking outdoor kitchen, dining area, the works. He wanted a 16ft x 18ft pergola with a polycarbonate roof, so that the patio can still be used in less-than-ideal weather.

The project hit a slight snag during permitting since the as-designed location of the pergola was too close to the lot setback, but moving it in on paper was no problem. He wasted to time in getting the pergola installed, as it took less than 30 days from our submittal of final drawings to having the pergola built!

One nice detail we enjoyed about this pergola is the use of shou sugi ban (yakisugi) on the wood used for the pergola. This process involved charring the surface with a propane torch, brushing off the excess char and ash, and then finishing with oil. It provides a long-lasting and beautiful protective finish on the exterior of the wood that looks stunning.
