Pergola Plans
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you do custom pergola plans?
Yes, we do! Check out our Custom Pergola Plans page.
I can’t find a certain dimension. Where is it?
All dimensions necessary for the construction of your pergola should be given on the drawings you purchased. Start with the specific detail for the item you’re looking at. If it’s not given there, check the first sheet of the drawing set. If you still can’t find it, email us and we’ll help.
Where can I buy ____ ?
The items we specify are usually available at your local big-box hardware store or online. We do have links to products we typically specify available for easy reference.
How do I do ____ when building my pergola?
We have a detailed How-To tutorial on our website for building a pergola. Otherwise, we also have a series of videos on building a pergola available on YouTube, which walk you through the steps.
Your plans aren’t in metric. What gives?
Since our main customer base is in the US, our plans use US Customary units (inches, feet, and pounds). Most lumber sold in English-speaking countries is in US dimensional lumber sizes anyway, even if called something different. The Canadian Wood Council has a document on metric equivalents to nominal lumber sizes that might be helpful for those using metric.
Where can I print these plans at full size?
Any of your typical print shops (Fedex, UPS, OfficeMax, etc.) should be able to print these drawings at full size. If you’re looking to save a little money, they’re still perfectly legible at 18″ × 24″ (ARCH C) paper size.
Can I substitute different components or connectors?
Yes, you can! However, bear in mind the General Notes on the drawing set specific to premade components. You will need to buy a substitute component that meets or exceeds the performance characteristics of the one specified. For your reference, we have provided a list of acceptable substitutes for items we commonly specify, though this list is not exhaustive.
What is the frost depth in my area?
This varies by geographic location - check our page for more information.
What about painting or staining my pergola?
Have at it! Paint and stain is such a personal choice that we did not feel it prudent to include any provisions for painting or staining on the drawings. Just ensure that the paint or stain you choose will perform well in exterior conditions. Also bear in mind that any paint or stain will need to be periodically renewed as it weathers.
I’m worried that my pergola won’t cast enough shade. What can I do about this?
You have a few options:
Increase the number of purlins and/or rafters and adjust the spacing,
Rotate the purlins 90 degrees so that they lay flat on the tops of the rafters,
Purchase a retractable shade from any number of retailers, which will allow you to add more shade as needed on especially hot days, or
